Every so often, a trend within motorcycling captures the imagination of the younger generation, or the public in general. Beginning in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was freestyle motocross. The evolution of Freestyle motocross, also known as FMX, precipitated motorcycle development, fashion apparel trends, related consumer goods, and the overall marketing and public face of motorsports. In the beginning freestyle motocross was largely dismissed and even scorned but eventually it went mainstream and helped build the multi-billion-dollar extreme sports industry that exists today.
